You are sure your belt is good and tight? Voltage is the first place it shows when mine is loose.
I mean the belt is tight, you can push on it and it doesn't bow down cause its tight, So the start relay to a ground is one of the most important? I know one goes from Neg Battery to the block I believe.

I have an 88 as well mine does the same thing but no loss in power, I checked all electrical connections, battery and alt is new, it's just the gauge, if you replaced or saw that it was has good charge I wouldn't worry about it

Yea, that ground cable from the battery to the block if supper important. (as well as the braided cable from the back of the head to the firewall)

Besides following Cruisers info, I was pointing out that that Positive power wire from the alternator, goes to the big terminal on the starter relay. There it meets the wire to the battery and fans out all over the place. While you are there you might put your meter between that and the block, and see that that connection is good as well as the grounds. (what I meant is meter the VOLTAGE, from there to the block)

It's just the fact when you say come to a stoplight and the wipers are going and the defroster on you have to turn them off because the motor Voltage hits the red line, 9, then cause the motor to start running weird.

Sounds good. I'll give it a try and get going on doing the wires.
