88 Cherokee with hard engine knock

How did you guys determine the rod is broken?
The only ways I know of are the either a hole in the block / oil pan or by pulling all 6 spark plugs and seeing which piston isn't moving anymore.
Connecting rods don't just randomly break after being parked.
