Default 88 4.0 liter cherokee stalls.. HELP

Engine runds fine, passed CA smog. but after 30-40 minutes of driving stall.. let it cool, and it starts right up.

put in new computer and it just starts up and dies imediately. Does new computer need programming?

Help what could this be.. should be an easy fix, as engine otherwise runs perfect! What's going on?

what exactly does it take to do the CPS replacement?? I hear it's right on top of the bell housing, can you get to it between the firewall and engine?

ok. picked up this jeep yesterday. saw the problem first hand fer the first time.. It stalled after ~ 30 minutes on the freeway. got to the top of the ramp and it stalled in 2nd gear making the right tur..
after 30 minutes, it strted up and drove it the other 3 blocks home..

Sound like a crank sensor to youguys?? it has a BRAND new ECU and coil in it. ( had the problem with the old one.

That looks like it. You can see it by looking down the rear driver side of the engine, or looking up from underneath. It is on the top left if looking from underneath. There is a plug in for it around the rear of valve cover

could also be the ballist resistor... same thing happpend to me, eventually it wouldnt rub for more thank a couple seconds. it the seramic thin right by your air box. try wiring the two orange and black wires together. if that is your problem it will run perfectly.

You can replace the CPS from underneath your Jeep with a couple long extensions. Make sure not to drop one of the bolts into the bellhousing. If that happens the engine or tranny have to come out to retreive it.
Slot the new CPS so that you never have to completely pull the bolts ever again. You just need to slightly loosen them for a second CPS if it is ever required.

Check all the grounds as well b/c a bad or weak ground will get worse when it heats up.

Mud all day is right,I had same exact thing happening to my 92.Changed a bunch of stuff before I read about the ballast resister on the driver's side fender.I did what mud said and it fire up and stayed running,i would try it before any thing. It only take's a couple of minute's to check and there only 10.00 buck's at the zone if that is it.(they had to order one in for me)
Hope that's it,simple fix for all the head ache it can cause you finding it.Good luck.

just reading your responses after taking it to werk this morning. seemed to run fine. Changed the CPS last night after some cursing.. Autozone had it fer half what napa and kragen had it for, FWIW.

Wish I had thought to slot it!!! That would have been trick.. If it stalls again I'll check the ballast chingy dingy. made it to work this morning (~30 min drive) with no issue.
