Did you properly index the distributor before installing it?.

Did you fully remove the distributor from the jeep? If so you'll need to set the distributor timing.

Set the motor to TDC and then drop the distributor in making sure the rotor points at cyl 1 once installed. You may need to involve a timing gun once its running again, i'm not sure how "smart" the 2.8l engine control units were.

If you didn't remove the distributor then check your sparkplug firing order and make sure that's right.

So the rotor button end should be pointing towards the number 1 cylinder, not #1 on dist cap
also, do I have to worry about a oil pump rod being stuck in the bottom of the dist

pointed at the number 1 cyl on the dist cap. not at the actual cyl in the motor.

as for the oil pump rod, no as long as its engaging the pump its fine.

I just re read my thread here, and I did not remove the distributor when I replaced the ICM ... I just removed the cap and rotor.....so no need to pull the distributor out right.....i just dont understand why its popping back through carb and not starting after i replaced the icm

This is why I asked ICM?

So, this is a 2.8 V6 with the GM distributor and you replaced the module inside the distributor?

If that's the case it sounds like the firing order is off. Check the plug order. being off can cause backfires/no starts.
