So I drove my XJ on the freeway today, (took about 40 seconds to 50) and by the time I hit 55 (2 minutes later) the transmission kept going back between 3rd and 2nd gear. Much like it being unsure which gear to use.

Do I have a busted transmission? What could be the culprit? Thanks for any help.

 

And is there an interchangeable transmission from another car? If I have to change it, Im not sure I wanna keep the same tranny.

 

What engine and transmission do you have?

 

85 XJ with the carbureted 2.8 V6 auto transmission

 

may need to adjust kick down cable if it has one

 

I think it may have a GM transmission, not the good AX4. The engine and transmission from an 85 Chevy S10 might swap over.

 

It has the Chrysler A904 3-speed.

 

I guess 84-86 were bastard years for drivetrain parts. GM engine, MOPAR transmission that bolts to a GM tranny, where does Ford come in to play?
