Default 85 cherokee, selec-trac problems

Just bought this thing last night. Not sure if 4x4 works on it. This is the one that has the shift lever that shows "H-N-L" and then has the switch on the console that says 4wd or 2wd. So, just kinda guessing how this works: I put truck in neutral (while running) and put t-case in neutral. Set switch to 4wd, engage the t-case in either high or low and away we go right??? Here are my issues : when I try to put the tcase back into either high or low, it grinds like crazy. I have to either force it into either high or low or I have to shut the truck off. Other thing is that I don't know if I'm in 4wd or not cuz the little indicator to the left of the instrument cluster doesn't illuminate. Suggestions??? Am I doing this right???

P.s. I'm a first time jeep owner but not new to wheeling. Had an 87 4runner before this I built from the ground up...

In H, at a stop, engage the switch to 4wd. Drive a few feet and it should be engaged. Neutral in the transfer case was used for towing the Jeep behind a motorhome.

Heard that man. I'll give it a shot. I guess the 4wd/2wd switch just locks the front axle in??? Kinda like how Chevys 4wd works??

Yes. You select 2wd or 4wd first. If 4wd is selected and engaged, you can then choose H, N or L.

Sweet, think I might have a problem with the actuator in the front axle or something then. Gonna check it out more this weekend

Not sure it has an actuator on the front axle, but it sure does on the transfer case.

Alright cool. I'm thinking my actuator up front may be bad. I'm gonna check it out soon, see what I can figure

Update : truck is stuck in 4x4, not the opposite. 4wd light is inop (suspect a bulb, but maybe indicator sensor). Hoping to check on more tonight.
