Default 85 Cherokee motor swap

I'm new to the Jeep world and I have a question. I have an 85 Cherokee with a 2.5l, is it possible to swap that out for a 5.2 out of a 95 Cherokee? How much work is involved with this.

Thanks.

a 95 cherokee would most likely have either the 2.5 or 4.0 i6

The 2.5, and 5.2 have a different bellhousing as does the 4.0. 2.5 is a GM 60* bellhousing. A 3.4 from a camaro will work.

Are you talking about a Grand Cherokee with a 5.2L or a Cherokee with a 4.0L?

Actually in 84-86 there was less engine bay room because the 6 cylinder was the 2.8L V6 and not the 4.0L. I believe you would have to cut down some of the firewall to have enough room, and I believe the motor mounts would change as well.

Default 85 cherokee motor swap

I double checked today and the donor is a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Everything is there for it. Can I get it too fit and how much work will be involved.

My 85 had a 2.5-4 speed put a 91 4.0,ax15,231 transf. You do not have to cut the firewall!!!! Its a time consuming job but overall not too bad. Dont know bout the 5.2, but it can be done with creativity. you will need everything elec. from doner!!

Honestly, if you are going to consider a V8 swap into an XJ, there will be a large amount of custom work needed no matter what. There is no "drop-in, bolt-on" V8 swap for XJs. Not to say it can't be done, but it will require some serious time and effort, as well as some good fab skills. There are a couple guys on Naxja with 5.2s in XJs but it took them alot of time and effort to get them in there and running. They make for some sick trail rigs though, and if you've got the time and skill I say go for it. But if you are looking for easy, look to swap a 3.4 V6 or something a bit simpler...
