85 to 94 swap?
Buddy of mine has a 85 cherokee 4wd with the GM 2.8 V6 he says its a 4 speed manual but looking at the trannys that came in that motor/year it seems it would have to be a 5 speed...any way my 94 is a 4.0 auto 2wd and he told me i could have it for 500. Comes with everything on the jeep plus a extra np207 and an extra front axle. I want to know first would his 4wd parts work with my 4.0? If so I could have 3 working jeeps, two of which would be converted to 4wd, for 500 bucks plus 1 4wd tranny. I have a wrecked body with a good drive train...

I wouldnt put the 2.8 in from the 4.0 that would be down grading. I would say the input shafts are different but I could be wrong

Tranny is not a desirable unit (weak from the factory) transfer case will be a 207 (not much if any after market support) Front axle will work. Not the best doner set up to work with given the time and effort that the swap will require ! I would pass on it and look for a wrecked newer model with the parts that you need.

I'd hold out for a 91+ 4wd with the non-vacuum actuated axles. You should be able to find one for around that $500 mark, I just scored a '94 for $450. So it is possible if you keep your eyes open.

Im still alittle confused on the fact that it does have a 4 speed and according to all I found it should either have a 5 speed manual or a 3 speed auto...alittle confusing. Thing is I am not looking to go crazy offroading with this jeep. Just alittle fun in the mud or slight hills on the weekends. I would really like to know exactly what tranny it is though.

AX-4 - 4 speed manual - manufactured by Aisin-Warner - used '84-'87 with 2.5L I-4 and GM 2.8L V6. Most anything is possible given that repairs sometimes require installing whatever is available!

The ax-4 will not work with the 4.0 and the 207 will not work with a aw-4 unless you get an older one with the smaller spline count. The 85 used an entirely different drivetrain then your 4.0L. The frount would fit but would have different gearing most likely.
