Post 8.25" rebuild

I'm getting a really bad gear whine from the rear end of my Cherokee. I work at a Subaru dealership where we also have a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge service department. One of the technicians has told me (without getting too involved) that I need to replace my ring and pinion. Fortunately, another co-worker just regeared his XJ with 4.10s and he's going to sell me his 3.55 rings, pinions, and carriers. They are the Dana 30 in the front, and Chrysler 8.25" in the back; I have 3.07 stock Dana 30 in the front and Chrysler 8.25" in the back.

My question is, do I need to replace the carriers in my XJ or can I leave the old ones in and just replace the rings and pinions?

Any other tips or tricks on rebuilding these would be much appreciated as this will be my first time doing a differential rebuild.

Thanks!

c8.25 are one of the easier axle's to set up cause they have adjusting rings to move the carrier in or out in relation to the pinion. So its not too bad to do but yea i would just get a junkyard axle if your staying with stock ratio's

Yep X2 on the JY rear. Your going to need a dial indicator to set the backlash on both rears also when mine went (8.25) it turned out the be the carrier bearing...Tj
