NO. Stock was that connector dead-ended if you had an NP231, and a jumper harness to an electrical switch on the transfer case if you had an NP 231. Leave it be.

Good morning, Nicolai,

Let's clarify a little.

One end of the RED plastic tube is plugged into the harness on the rear of the transmission (the plug with 4 tubes), and the other end of the red tube connects to the Y plug on the firewall.

There is a rubber tube that plugs into the same Y plug, that is routed to the front of the vehicle and plugs into the vacuum ball. (the third connection is a rubber tube as well, and is the "source" of the vacuum.)

The vacuum ball has other lines that plug into it, but all of them complete a vacuum circuit, so you'll need to acquire a vacuum ball if you want to pursue hooking up your system the way it came from the factory. (I may be wrong, but the vacuum ball in your picture is for later model cherokees, not your 88.)

I was able to repair mine so it works as intended, but in my case, all the tubes were there, but broken.

It will be a little more difficult to figure out how to hook it all up if you're missing parts up front.

You may want to reconsider Cruisers recommendation and reconfigure the front axle vacuum motor.

I just did that and now I'm in 4x4 all of the time. I've done a lot of research on doing it. And I read that the t-case still controls the axle with being in 4 or 2wd. But like I said I'm still in 4x4. The 4x4 indicator light isn't on but Understandable because no vacuum. Is there a way to have the axle locked and still be able to be in 2wd? I'd imagine so because I made the axle shafts one piece instead of two, like the 91+

Please help

Are you sure? In any case if it is indeed in 4WD, (when not selected), it might be the linkage to the transfer case.....It should not drive the front drive-line in 2WD.

You do know you need to back-up a bit to get it to disengage from 4WD?

Yep. Do the mod per the link. The TRANSFER CASE puts you in 4wd, not the front axle.
