my 1989 jeep cherokee i went to turn on 4x4 and now it will no turn off. plz help me i dont know what to do i can push the lever down but cant turn off 4x4 parttime. plz help
My 89 Comanche does that and I have to do a complete circle counterclockwise for it to disengage. I know it is my linkage sticking or the vaccume line is not working right, but havn't had the time to fix it, but turning does work.

yeah there are some, i got a real long graviel road and a shorter dirt road. what do you want me to do. I also went up to my coldasack and did sharp turns and nothing seemed diffrent.
Go on the dirt road, keep the wheels straight, and gun it. That way you can see if your front wheels are being driven. If the front wheels are throwing dirt and rocks, your 4wd is engaged.

Look under the drivers floor from the outside till you see the transmission
Between it and the floor pan will be a lever and linkage
That's ur 4x4 lever
If its broken or out of alignment, this could be your problem.
Next check the passenger side of the front axle
There will be a UFO shaped diaphragm on the back of the axle with 1-3 hoses coming out next to it
If not, that's your problem. Also make sure they are firmly attached
A ziptie will hold them to the fitting nicely

^LOL. The truth is there. jack stands, turn her on, shift into gear and see what's moving. I love it, so simple and so obvious.
Also, if you went turning around sharp turns on adphault. you will know if you are in 4-lo pr not. Even 4-hiugh doesn't like turning on asphault. just food for thought/ it should be jumping/

Anywho
I am betting the diaphragm hoses are loose and ur not fully disengaging the axle
Thus the indicator is staying lit on the dash
That diaphragm also tells the dash light when to be on or off
If the plunger inside the axle disconnect (UFO thingy) is not sliding all the way to the right towards the tire, the axle stays engaged and the light stays on.
Check the hoses
Check the linkage
The system is stupid simple.
