Neither is mine. Ive got a 2000 with the 231 TC. My dash has all sorts of 4wd lights but none of them go on. 4wd works fine. I figure its either a bad bulb or bad switch. Ive read that the tc switches go bad after a while. Maybe Ill look into it in the spring.
If you pull on the lever, then can't remember you pulled on the lever, you should not be driving. The multitude of dash lights are simply annoying. Only information center I'm interested in is the one that tells me when I'm getting ****.

Only lights I care about is the CEL or Check Gauges light (usually means my alternator took a **** on me).
Its probably the switch if the bulb isnt burned out. IMO - not worth the time to fix it unless you really like having your jeep in "showroom" condition.

The only vehicle that the light ever worked on is my 98 XJ and that went out about 2 years ago. And I have owned 4 XJ's, K-10 Blazer, Toyota P/U, Nissan P/U and International Scout and none of the ever had a light. As TurboXJ said "If you pull on the lever, then can't remember you pulled on the lever, you should not be driving."

I'm not sure why some people insist on making posts that do nothing to assist the member with their problem. If someone asks for help they don't need to be talked down to regardless of how small an issue you may think their problem is. Not everyone uses their Jeep as a weekend toy and some people actually prefer to fix everything they can. As easy as this is to fix I say why not? I'll offer some useful info to the OP. It's most likely the switch on the transfer case and easy to change. Here's a good write up:

Year and transfer case are very important to troubleshoot this as there are two totally different ways to activate that light on XJs. One of them is a simple switch on the transfer case, the other is a mad maze of vacuum tubes...

I've had plenty 4x4's as stated above by others, likewise I don't really care if they have a indicator light or not ( seriously who gives a crap ) but at this time my full time a part time are on constantly. I do find that to be annoying. So Trueth be told I would rather mine function properly then to have those dang lights shining in my eyes for no reason at all.
Reason I posted this was because I heard of people having it in 4 full time sayin its in part time when lever is fully engaged in 4 hi full time. I'm not dumb I was just wanting to know an easy fix just incase that's it
