Hello, on my 97 xj sport, I only put it in 4hi once when I first got it, to test it out, make sure it works and whatnot. I thought I had taken it out of 4 but then figured out it was still in 4(front tires pulling on the ground) me and a friend finally jammed it up really hard and it popped out of 4.(no more tire pull) has anyone else had this problem? What's wrong if so? Thanks

Driving around on hard surfaced roads in 4WD will do that. Do you not have a working indicator light?
It's a wonder you didn't break the transfer case chain. Didn't you notice hopping around and tire squeal going around turns? Did you think that was normal?
What was wrong was the driver wasn't paying attention to the indications of improper 4WD usage.

Maybe you just need to adjust transfer case linkage. Here is a vid on how to adjust it.

Indicator light is located in the instrument cluster.
Here are pics of my 2000 with the NP242.

IDK if you're the guy I recommended this to - and this is a possible workaround (not a fix) - but to get out of 4HI you might find it easiest to put it in reverse, and reverse HARD AND FAST for like 100 feet.
That usually does the trick for me, otherwise sometimes just getting off the road and into a parking lot with some snow or dirt (offroad) will kick it out of 4hi.
Again, it's a workaround, as I know I'll be needing to do adjustments as well, but it was pretty much a guarantee that the reverse would work for me, if not the first time I try it, the second time would. Have friends with the same thing with both wranglers and cherokees (242)

Put the transmission into neutral then the Tcase in neutral. Then shift transmission to drive. Then give it gas to about 1500 with 1 or 2 foot stabs.
Let the rpms settle. Put transmission back into neutral then the Tcase into two wheel drive, shift transmission back to drive and drive away.
so if that happens again to anyone give it a try. But once I adjusted it and made sure the linkage was up to snuff ,that all went away.
I'm sure we all know I'm talking about this trick for the automatic transmission Not manual..

Here's what needs to be done first. Learn how to shift it as it was designed to be shifted.
Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in ITALICS are mine.
"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.
4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".
To shift out of 4L, shift the transmission into neutral with the vehicle stopped, shift the transfer case lever to 2H, then to D if you have an automatic, or into first gear with a manual, and continue on.
