4wd not working?

4wd not working?
hey guys,
just tried to put my jeep in 4x4 and it went in, but took about 30-45min to get it out of 4x4 PT to 2hi. tried "goosing" the throttle, reversing and spinning it on gravel but no go. then after 45min it just popped out of 4x4 while driving around trying to get it unstuck. i know my u joint on my axle is done but would that be the whole problem with my 4x4? transfer case i believe is NP242 Selec-Trac and Front axle is Dana 30 HP. 1992 xj limited.
any input would be great.
