Default 4hi problems

Ok so i did a ton of searches but so far was unable to find the problem, and closest one to it i emailed the guy but he has not replied.

problem. I have a 96 XJ sport 5 spd with 231 and when we finally got some snow I decided to finally try out the 4hi. Well it worked fine at 1st and then after a little bit it would ground. mind you that 4lo works and so does regular 2wd. I do not know what to do or how to handle this situation. I keep reading that I should adjust my linkage. I am not sure how to do that or if that would fix this so please any ideas would be great. Otherwise I am going to have to get a used transfer case and just have it replaced.

Can you describe the symptoms better? You are aware the np231 in 4x4 should only be used off road or on slippery/ice/snow covered roads?

Where you on Dirt or pavement? Using 4wd with a 231TC on pavement will cause binding and breakage. With the 231 4hi and lo are for SLIPPERY surfaces ONLY.

Please explain what you mean by " Well it worked fine at 1st and then after a little bit it would ground." If you meant grind it probably means that you need to adjust your linkage, because your transfer case linkage is not letting the it go into 4hi and probably moving it to far so it goes partway into the neutral position.

Thank you guys for the responses. Yes I am aware that it needs to be in slippery surface and thats why I was trying it finally on the snow covered roads. As what happen was it works at first and then it starts to grind. I do not know how to adjust the linkage but if anyone could direct me to a DIY i will gladly do that before I got spend more money on this thing.

There's one nut when you look at the linkage from underneath, just loosen it and slide the bar In whichever direction necessary, tighten then it's good to go. I've had to adjust it on both o my Cherokees
