Default 4.56 on 33's questions.

I just found a totally new ring and pinion 4.56 gear for the D44 on craigslist for 70 bucks. This is planning far ahead, since I don't even have a D44 to put em in yet, but I was wondering if that'd be good for 33 inch tires. I'm pretty sure 70 bucks for that is a good deal, aye?

Also, the ad mentions that they are "standard rotation" I dunno what that means lol. Brand is Yukon Gear.

Sounds like a deal. Std rotation means it could not be used in a rev, rotation or high pinion front axle. So I believe it would only work in a rear d44 diff. I'm not sure but I do not think there is such thing as a std rotation front d44. I may be wrong though. Either way 4.56 is the right gear choice for 33s, and its a good deal.

Ok a have a few things to say you might find helpfull.

1) Xj 44's are kinda rare and usually expensive when you find one.

2) To run low gears you will probably have to swap the carrier as well. I think allot of the factory XJ 44's came with the smaller carrier. But thats a good time to add a locker anyway.

3) Dont forget you will have to match the gearing in the front axle if and when you put them in.

I would not buy the gears if I didnt already have the axle.

I did have a XJ 44, and I opted to sell it, and buy a ford 8.8 w/4.10's out of a ford explorer instead. I already had front and rear axles out of a 4cyl auto XJ for the 4.10 gears, But after shattering the ring gear on the dana 35 I opted for something stronger. If I was to do it over again, I would only have made shure the 8.8 I purchased had a factory limited slip.

Ford 8.8 has same lug pattern.
You can get a adapted u-joint to run from you stock xj rear shaft to the yoke plate that bolts to the rear axle.
Some ford 8.8's come with rear disc brakes.
You will need to weld on new spring purches and shock mounts.
I know they come in 4.10's not shure about other ratio's. But is a standard XJ that comes factory with 3.07's 4.10's work just fine with 33's.

just my opinion.

Well come summer time I'm gonna make a few trips to a big scrapyard here. I know of a couple MJ's laying around and I was gonna see if they had a D44 on em. I'm aware I'd need to swap the carrier so I was just planning on putting a locker in instead. Do you suppose if all else fails, I could just resell the gears for 70 bucks again?

You should be able to resell them aslong as you can find someone who needs them. I would think they would sell pritty easy on e-bay.

Keep in mind. MJ are spring under axle. XJ is spring over axle.
Not shure about where the shock mounts are on the MJ. But you still might need to weld new shock mounts.

Pritty positive you will need to weld on new spring purches anyway. If you flip the axle then your tires will go in reverse.
