Smile Loss of power at low altitude

I have a wierd problem I'm hoping a fundi can help with (Jeep mechanics can't seem to). My Cherokee 2.8 CRD (2006) at low altitude will not rev over 2500 rpm. It operates normally at the altitude where I live (5500 feet above sea level), but has this problem when I travel. The fault diagnostic light comes on and the mechanics tell me that my EGR valve is faulty and want to replace it at hug e cost. Any idea why the altitude makes a difference and what the problem could be?

could be your maf (mass air flow) sensor could not be adjusting. it only resets itself at start up and at wot ( wide open throttle) when it does this try just jamming on the gas. see if that dosent fix it. its a problem with your computer adjusting to the density of the air thats coming in your intake
