Just bought a 2000 cherokee sport (only 64K miles on it), and it looks and runs great. Everything is original. Only had to replace the steering stab.
I bought this Jeep to meet my needs for a commuter, 4x4 in MI winter and trails for bowhunting and fishing. I did not expect a high-efficiency vehicle! I believe this is a GREAT compromise for all my needs in a ride.
So....my question is what kind of MPG are you all seeing on "stock" vehicles of this kind? I seem to be getting between 20-21 MPG. Most of the miles are highway at speeds 70-75 mph.
A friend said he used to get about 24 in his a while back--sound right? If you're getting better mileage than me, what might you be doing differently?
Again, I am happy with the current performance for the vehicle it was intended to be, so lets nip that in the bud! LOL
Thanks all!!

My stock 2000 has never seen 20 MPG. I might be able to get 20 MPG going strictly 55 MPH on the highway. It gets from 14 to 16 MPG city and around 18 MPG highway going ~80 MPH. When you say you "seem" to be getting ~20 MPG how are you calculating it?

You can experiment with each fill--one tank, drive under 65 mph, another tank, drive 75 mph, etc...see what happens.
My commute is 70-100 miles per day depending on which of two places I go (all highway). I would be very disappointed to get less than 20 MPG in the 4L-I6.

lol, i was just looking at this the other day... but ill be honest, I didnt buy my xj for fuel economy either, so no comment. (it sucks fuel like Jenna Jameson on set)
According to the ScanGauge http://www.scangauge.com/buy/?gclid=...FdVL5QodnytqiQ I have installed in my '96 cherokee and my '99 cherokee I get an average 21 mpg in the '96, 22 in the '99. I live in a rural area, rarely do stop-and-go driving, and rarely exceed 55mph.

I wondered if aftermarket programs helped any as on a say a Duramax. I've seen the aftermarket stuff work on diesels, but it would have to be worth the cost obviously.
Sounds like 20-21 is pretty normal so far?
