Default 31's with aftermarket rims and no lift?

You guys have probably had this question countless times, but one more cant hurt. I couldn't quite find what I was looking for using the search function.

It's about time for me to pick up a set of summer tires for my XJ. Right now it has some rusty OEM rims with some wildcats or wildtrax or something like that for tires. They were decent in the snow, but I won't get another season out of them.

I've had a set of old American Racing Hammers laying around with some 35's mounted on them. (No, I don't plan on attempting the 35's) I need to measure the backspacing so I can compare numbers, I'll see about doing that tomorrow morning.

What I would like to do (assuming the AR rims have less backspacing) is be able to stuff some 31x10.5 tires on my Jeep with no lift.

Like I said I'm not sure of the backspacing of the AR rims, but I think they'll stick out more than the OEM ones.

This is the AR rims way back when I had them on my S10. (They look better clean, couldn't find a good picture) I'm not sure how they compare backspacing-wise to a Jeep. XJ's have what.. 5" or so on the OEM rims?

And these are dual lug wheels by the way, they have 5x4.5 too. I had them on my Ranger with 235's and the 35's.

This is my 97 Sport I'm hoping to put them on.

Anyway, has anyone had 31's on a stock XJ without lift, using just aftermarket rims with less backspacing?

The only way that you get the 31's on without a lift is to do a lot of cutting on your fenders. The largest tires you can get in without a lift or cutting would be 235s or 30" that is if you have at least a 3.75 back space you shouldn't have any rubbing. I've ran 30x9.50-15, 3.75 back space with no lift and no cutting and they fit perfect without any rub. Hope this helps you a little.

Yeah not without cutting. Plus it looks like your sagging a little bit too.

I've got a buddy who ran 32s on a stock ZJ.... Everything rubbed lol, but go for it. If it's too bad, a budget boost will solve it. I like the big tire small lift look myself.

A little trimming, and bumpstops, and you should be fine, assuming the wheels have somewhere between 3.75-4" backspacing, and are 8" wide. I'd do it if I wanted 31's, I don't see the need for lift with only 31's, and I'm only running 1.5" of lift with 33's on mine.

Off topic question, do Belltech 6400's fit our vehicles? I could always steal my set from the Ranger, and do a coil spacer in the front if the tires don't fit well. That project is going no-where anyway. I keep changing plans with it. -_-

I had a XJ once that I fit 33/12.50/15's on 8 in. wide wheels & NO lift.

Granted, the tires were almost bald & they barely scrubbed in the rear at full stuff.

It was one nasty hack job.

There is something to be noted in regards to tire rub; What are you planning on doing with the Jeep? Are you driving on paved 4-lane roads, or driving through the woods? I noticed that factor is never addressed in any of these "will these tires fit posts".

When I put 31's on with a 3 inch lift I had no problems driving to work and back. The first time I went off road I was rubbing bumper ends and popped of a flare.

Road and light trails, and by light I mean trails that could pass for a country driveway. This is my daily driver as well, I'm building up a separate dedicated rig with the 35's for the heavy stuff. 90% of the driving this jeep will see will be on the road.

I'd say you will probably do fine. But in the front it will rub the plastic part on the end of the front bumper at least it did with mine. But that can be cleaned up very easily without effecting the actually body.
