New to the forum but not 4x4ing.

I have a 97XJ. Good rig except for one annoying condition. Seams the creators of the AW4 were not offroaders. When going down steep hills, I like to use as much engine breaking a possible, especially in rough terrain. Down side is the AW4 tends to shift into 2nd when I want to keep it in 1st. I have seen articles on a fix for 96' and older rigs, but not on 97' and newer. Is there a fix to lock it into 1st gear only and keep 2nd gear locked out, then switch back to normal when not needed.???

 

ive found a torque convertor lockout helps with engine braking more so than the 1-2 lock. the TCU is the same on the 97 as the ones up to 96, you just might get a CEL when you bypass the TCU.

 

Are you a member of NAXJA? If you are then go there and PM BrettM he has a kit which allows you to lock your AW4 in whichever gear you like and convert it back to normal operation when you are done by the flip of a switch.

 

apparently BrettM is MIA it took ktmracer like 3 months to get his after painstakingly tracking him down

 

brettm doesn't do the jeep thing anymore. he hasnt been on pirate or naxja since 2005

he still made the shift kit up until last winter, but i have heard rumors of him stopping production altogether
