All of the above that you changed PLUS:

Remove the ENTIRE interior except for driver seat. (carpet, seats trim, console)

Remove luggage rack on roof

Remove spare tire

Remove trailer hitch frame if equipped

Remove all skid plates if equipped

Replace tires with 225 35 15 low rolling resistance tires

Remove front driveshaft

Remove all the doors

Change oil with 5w10 Synthetic

Drain gastank and fill with 3 gallons of NON Ethanol gasoline and add 1 oz Acetone to gas.

Startup and drive 45MPH. No faster. Drafting other vehicles is a bonus!

Do these and you will probably hit 25-26mpg no problem.

Here's an aftermarket Cylinder deactivation option. For the price its a sick deal if it works.

This kind of mileage in an XJ with the 4.0 is only realized under very specific conditions:

- totally stock
- slightly over-inflated street tires
- manual transmission
- about 60 mph cruising in 5th with some drafting on flat terrain
- no extra crap in Jeep

I've seen 28 mpg on a few highway trips driving like the above. That's filling before I hit the road, then a fillup and calculation as soon as I reach my destination. Around town I see more like 16.

lowrange2: You gonna laminate that or wax directly onto the cardboard? Lol

What is the best realistic MPG you can get 20?

So if 27 MPG is possible on a new car, isnt it possible on a old car with better injectors than what exist in 1996?
But why is it so big difference in MPG, its the same horsepower?
If the guy on the other forum is also in Norway or a country that uses the Imperial gallon then YES it is possible. 27mpg (Imperial) is equal to 22.5mpg (US). (1 Imperial Gallon = 1.201 US Gallons) In my bone stock 93 (4.0 liter, manual trans) I was able to get 23 mpg (US) using non-ethonal fuel until I went with 30" mud tires and now only get 19-20mpg consistently.

I wonder if you did 55mph if you would have gotten 26mpg?

Throw in a 4 banger. With a light foot at about 65mph, i can get 26mpg on 31s if its a windless day and im very light on the skinny pedal. Its usually about 23 with my normal driving.

I don't know. 60mph was slow. 55mph would add more time to the trip, obviously. Maybe next time I'll try 55mph. But I've added a brush guard and CB so it won't be the same aerodynamics.

All of the built-in resistance in the drive-train probably isn't helping.

Oh and shave your legs.

Its funny that he claim that he have measured it twice, from A to B 8.5 liters on a 100km (27,7 MPG) trip. From B to A (same way home) to 8.3 liters on 100km (28,3 MPG). Before new 4-hole injectors he used 10 liters on 100km (23,4 MPG).

Its a XJ 1996 4.0L with Dynomax VT, magnaflow, MSD coil, K/N filter, 63mm TB spacer etc. and this injectors: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ULTIMATE-Fue...771895&vxp=mtr

But the conclusion is that this isnt true?

Got 26 once driving between Flaggstaff and Albuequque, 235 tires, 5spd, unloaded, new U-joints, newer inj, 97 octane fuel, and I think it was around the spring equinox. when I came back the other way I got the normal 20.

Guys, please remember that in Europe (the op was from Norway) we use the Imperial sized gallon (yep, we use the correct size gallon).

A US Gallon is 3.785 litres
A UK (imperial) Gallon is 4.546 litres

Therefore, when the OP asked if 27mpg was possible, he is actually asking if 22.4mpg (US) is possible - and the answer is YES IT IS!!!!!

I've personally got 27mpg on a run (22.4mpg US) several times whilst watching my speed carefully.

Some of you have stated figures like 26mpg (US), which translates into over 31mpg (Imperial).

One VERY IMPORTANT thing to remember, no matter where your Jeep is used, the console computer will only read in US Gallons unless calibrated. Therefore, whatever the trip computer says, multiply this by roughly 1.2 to get an Imperial MPG figure.
