Default 242 differences

going to pickup a nice 98 2dr 4x4 with a 231 with180k for $6000. my question is will an auto 242 from a a 98-01 bolt onto a 98 manual? heard talk about output spline count but is that only for the older ones, or do i need an even rarer 242 for a manual tranny only? i know its got to come from an xj so i get the speedo input. just going to be a winter driver not a play toy so the 242 would be better for me. thanx joel

The 242 never came behind a manual transmission, the 231 is better so I would leave it in.

I will trade you a 242 for a 231 if you are interested.

To answer the original question, the spline count is the same but the input shaft length will need to be verified to make sure it doesn't bottom out.

i understand the argument for and against both, but i will be using it as a daily driver winter car while the vette is sleeping and not as an offroad toy in southern ohio. so the full-time would be better than the part time between patches of dry pavement and snow drifts going to work.

to 00t444e i will keep you in mind if this deal goes through

I have driven 4x4s daily in the snow for over 10 years, never once needed full time 4x4.

True, the correct set of tires depending on season does wonders!

Here, we usually get ice instead of snow when/if we get any at all. Ice is a whole different ball game.
