Default 242 TC

I have a standard 231 TC in my 2000 XJ. I have a chance to pick up a 242 TC out of a 97 or 98 XJ. Should I buy it?

The only thing the 242 has that the 231 doesnt is a full-time 4WD. I would stick with what you have and save your money.

Stick with the 231. The 242 has full time 4wd, but it's weaker offroad than the 231.

I'm not disputing what has been said, but I'm interested to know why the 242 is weaker. Mainly because I'll probably be asking dumb questions about how to fix it sooner or later!

Thanks for the advise. I'm going to leave well enough alone. I'm going to pick up a set of E-fans instead.

the main issue with the 242 is the chain. It's not as strong as the 231's chain and breaks easier when wheeling it. Most guys won't have a issue as they don't wheel it hard enough to cause that much strain though.

The rear pinion also isn't as strong, but there aren't many complaints about those. Either way, I'd rather go with the stronger 231.
