Might try this next time.

Ours just wouldn't separate so a small tubing cutter, rubber fuel line and clamps made it easy.

The reason high-mileage transmissions sometimes fail after a fluid change is because fluids contain detergents, and the fluid you've had in your transmission all this time has broken down and allowed parts to wear a certain way.

Then you put brand new fluid in, with strong detergents, and things are going to get eaten up because pressures are going to increase on those parts that have worn together with the old fluid.

It's recommended that if you haven't changed the fluid regularly and aren't experiencing any problems with the transmission, that you just let it be. Keep it topped off but don't flush it out.

I'd maybe consider doing a half-drain then refill at the most... but who knows, maybe you won't have any problems at all.

With an AW4 the changing of the fluid by draining from the drain plug and then repeating as necessary works just fine.

Yep. These trannies are hardy. Don't leave it full of crusty old fluid.

That's an old wive's tale. Why do these things never die? I've never lost a trans due to maintenance, even if it was overdue.

I think the 4l60e is the only one this happens to. They like to blow up just for the hell of it... especially after a rebuild Only way to have a reliable overdrive GM tranny is the 4l80 or a standard. Lots of $$$$ (and I means lots) buys a bullet proof 60e. Wish I could do a AW4 swap on my Z71

Drain and fill repeatedly over time as Walker, Cruiser, DJB and now also myself recommend. Mine came out the color of used engine oil and smelled worse than any fluid I've ever taken out of a vehicle. Did the above procedure and now it's nice and pink/red and the transmission is fine.

Well, i don't really know what to say, i didn't try taking it apart, but i couldn't see anything visibly nasty with it.

97 XJ (I think November 97) 4.0 ltr 6 cyl , RHD cause in Oz, but that likely doesnt matter.

Yours (as is every 87-01 with an auto) is the AW4 transmission.
