Default 2001 xj trouble code..

I have a code of p0432, which is described as catalyst inefficiency bla bla bla bank 2. Ive heard this is the cat, I've also heard a bad o2 sensor with throw this code also. Has any one had this code pop up? If so what was the fix? My xj runs great, doesn't burn oil, not a ton of leaks...I have to get it smogged in may, so I gotta get movin...thanks!

Most likely a failing catalytic converter.

If the Bank2 downstream O2 sensor was bad, it would set a high voltage or open code, not the low efficiency code.

The function for the downstream O2 sensor on OBD-II vehicles is to compare O2 content of the exhaust stream before and after the cat, if the voltage signal for the downstream sensor is the same as the upstream sensor (with small adjustment for time), the PCM interprets as the cat is no longer effective.

Ah...perfect, thank you. Whe I replace the cat, should I do the o2 sensors also?

Depends on how many miles are on the sensors. If you have between 100k and 150k on them, replacing them wouldn't be a bad idea, as these sensors have a finite lifespan and get "lazy" before they actually set a code.

If you do buy new sensors, buy a brand name only. I like Bosch and NTK. Never buy anything universal and ebay = noway for engine management sensors, UNLESS the brand name is a confirmed and reputable one.

I'll probably do that too. I work at Autozone, I sell Bosch o2s all damn day lol, 20% employee discount too! Now I just gotta find the cat. I live in cali, the damn EPA makes it nearly impossible to find a cat under $1000. Can't buy them aftermarket here. Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it!

$1000 for a replacement cat? Insane, even for an OEM part! Gotta be a better way!

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I've seen them online for $300, but no one will ship to ca, exact same cat too, so maybe I'll take a trip to Vegas and go buy a cat too lol, maybe if I win big, I won't have to pay for it, Vegas will! Lol
