Default 2001 XJ engine swap

Hi all. I have a chance to grab a nice non running XJ for a good price. It'll be my second and I'd like to rebuild the original engine, but will probably buy a replacement due to time. I'm near L.A. and wonder if there are any reputable builders in my general area. Gonna be a daily driver for my son, so I need something reasonably priced, but will pay a little more to a shop with a stellar rep. ANY advice is appreciated.

I'm very happy with the Promar, 242 / 4.0 , long block, that I purchased. You can find it online.

Just beware if you decide to rebuild that 2000 2001 are know to have bad heads. I would thoroughly check it for coolant in the oil. The crack can often be seen looking down through the oil cap.

Yeah, I'm thinking that that's what caused the motor to go. If I can get it for the right price, I'd be very willing to invest in a kiskass motor.

Don't waste your time and money on that 0331 head. Even in perfect condition, it's a ticking time bomb. Get a "TUPY or "Clearwater" head and not worry anymore. JMHO.

I'm clear on that. I'm trying to source a solid long block. If I'm lucky enough to just need a head, which Clearwater head do you recommend. there are 5 choices on their website, all are 0331...
-Thanks

This is the complete 0331 head. They also sell the stripped down (no valves or springs) and other models will "fit", but may require some minor modification and gasket matching. That link is the specific replacement for the 0331.

Odessa Cylinder Head #CHR238ZN, 6Cyl, 4.0, 99-07,OHV, 0331 New Casting. Comes complete with new valves, seals, and springs. Was $455 in 2015. I now see they added the $100 core charge because they don't want yours back.
