Default 2001 Coilpack 4.0 to Distributor Swap?

Hey guys,

I did some searching and can't find a great answer to this question. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have an 01 cherokee 4.0. Low oil pressure. If it comes down to needing a motor, which can I swap in? Does it need to be the same year? Can it be a distributor motor or does it need to be coilpack?

Thanks,

Richard

Low oil pressure isn't necessarily a problem, there are several members here running single-digit pressure at idle with no ill effects. That year seems to have a problem with this somewhat frequently. Any valvetrain or engine noises? Exactly what is the pressure at hot idle and on the road?
Could also be a bad pressure sender or plugged oil passage that feeds the sender.

Others will have to tell you exactly what year motors will swap and what details are involved. I'm 99% sure you can put most any HO block in there if you retain your head, manifolds and electronics.

My 2000 will drop to some fairly low pressure after its hot and using 5w30 oil. I would have no idea if it wasn't for the gauge on the dash either. Quiet and happy, no lifter tick.

At operating temp, my gauge reads 0 psi. I attached a mechanical gauge and saw 10 psi.

Yes, I have a 2000 also that Had low oil pressure due to BlowOut cam bearings from massive amount of coolant in oil, due to severley Cracked 0331 Head. The question though is can you put a earlier year 4.0 in a 2001XJ. Yes, if the donor short block is from a XJ. Im putting a 96 shortblock with a 92 head in my 2000 temporary, until I am able to Build my 2000s original Block. Titan Engines 4.8 Stroker kit looks pretty good, but I really want to build a Short Rod 4.5, cause the crosshatching is still present on all 6 cylinders in that 2000 block, and 4.5 Strokers are kinda rare, but so are 4.8s!

I believe 1996 is the oldest 4.0 you could put in your 2001. It will have all the correct mounting bolt holes, NVH, etc.

Any XJ or ZJ block will fit fine without modification. Indeed 95+ or 96+ is more desirable but the rest will certainly work.

If the pressure is simply low I wouldn't worry much about it. Make sure everything else is correct (good filter, OPSU oil galley is actually clear, oil pump functioning, etc) before coming to conclusions. Even then if it's not making noise it'll keep running for a long time.

Since it's an 01 you need to know if it's even been overheated, if the head cracked, and if it was replaced.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Thanks for the help guys. I'm planning on replacing the oil pump and pickup tube considering when I removed the valve cover, there was large amounts of sludge, and going from there.

Thanks again,

Richard
