Hard to put into 4x4
Hey there guys I'm new to the jeep world but I bought a 91 Cherokee and I went and tested out the 4x4. I was finding it kinda hard to get in to 4x4 and it was only saying it was in part time 4x4. It seems to me that all four wheels are pulling at the same time but was poping when you gave it some gas. Well after I got done testing it I found that it was a pain to get back into 2wd like the 4x4 was in the 2wd Position but the light was still showing it in part time so here I am lost all info is greatly Appreciated.

Hey there guys I'm new to the jeep world but I bought a 91 Cherokee and I went and tested out the 4x4. Not on pavement I hope?? I was finding it kinda hard to get in to 4x4 Is it lifted? and it was only saying it was in part time 4x4 If is is a np231 case that is only part time. It seems to me that all four wheels are pulling at the same time That would be 4x4 but was poping when you gave it some gas Possibly worn u-joints. Well after I got done testing it I found that it was a pain to get back into 2wd like the 4x4 was in the 2wd Position but the light was still showing it in part time If it is lifted the linkage could be out of adjustment. so here I am lost all info is greatly Appreciated.
The NP231 which is a part-time 4x4 to be only used PART of the TIME in LOOSE and SLIPPERY surfaces ONLY; NO PAVEMENT. The shift pattern is 2wd, 4wd part-time, Neutral, 4wd LOW
The NP242, which is a full-time and part-time 4x4. This has a "differential" inside that allows it to be used on pavement and also loose surfaces. The shift pattern is 2wd, 4wd full-time, 4wd part-time, Neutral, 4wd LOW.
The difficulty in shifting could be caused by a mal-adjusted linkage, bad vaccuum lines, or binding inside the transfer case. have you checked the fluid to make sure it is lubricated?

Eelcome to te forum and grats on the Jeep! We'll need to sort a few things out:
- Do you have the Command-Trac (NP231) transfer case? Shift pattern 2H, 4H, N, 4L
- Or do you have the Selec-Trac (NP242) transfer case? (2WD, 4x4 Part Time, 4x4 Full Time, N, 4 LO)
- How and where are you trying to shift on? 4H, 4x4 Part Time, and 4 Low must never be used on dry pavement. At the least your get problems shifting, worst you break things.
For the high ranges, shifting into them is as simple as taking your foot off the gas, yanking the shift back into 4H, 4PT, or 4FT, and off you go. For 4L you must come to a very slight crawl, or be stopped with the transmission in Neutral.
Quite often the fluid is neglected in these things. Since you just bought this Jeep I'd recommend changing all fluids so you know they're fresh. You can find writeups on here of how to do that if tou don't know how. Use any ATF to fill it.
Also, the linkage under that handle may be out of adjustment. Happens. Here's how to fix:
1 remove shift lever boot or move carpeting aside to access lever
2 position shift lever as far rear as possible and insert 1/8-inch shim between lever and shift gate
3 raise vehicle and support
4 under vehicle loosen shift linkage trunnion lock bolt and make sure the shift rod fits freely in trunnion and shift lever tighten bolt securely
5 lower vehicle remove shim and reinstall any components that where removed
