2000 XJ Front speakers not working!
I got the XJ from my son, and he wanted the radio as part of the deal. I finally got around to getting a new radio. Wired everything up, and both fronts not working. Back work fine. Where do I need to start testing? Oh, yes I have checked the wires from the radio to factory plugs in the dash, but not further. Son said they were working before the engine started knocking, and his radio removed. Thanks.....RR

Mine did the same thing, you need to check in the boots in the door hinge of the door. Wires get pinched there and end up don't working. Common thing that occurs over time. That's what I would look at first.

Just outta curiosity, but is there an amplifier installed somewhere? If there is, the fronts may be wired to that, which could also explain why they aren't working off the radio. If there's not, then I'd check the wiring in the doors as well. I probably should fix mine, but I've got all four speakers wired to my amp. Clarity is a world of difference....

Wires usually break within the loom that runs between the chassis and the door. Easy fix, run new wires.

Just fixed this in my 2001 the factory clips on the speaker were faulty every time I hit a bump one of the front speakers would cut in or out wires in the boot were fine. I just cut and spliced the bare wire right to the speaker terminals

Just had the same problem with my 2000, replaced my factory cassette deck with a new Kenwood cd player, ended up replacing the door speakers and running new wire to the front doors.

I took my door skin off today to poke around, and sure enough, broken cable inside the boot.
I made a short youtube video which may help some folks diagnose their speakers.
I plan on ordering a set of 5.25" Kenwood KFC-1394PS 3-way speakers and a couple of the Scosche SHCR03B 2 pin speaker lead harnesses that allow plugging in non factory speakers without cutting or soldering.
If the sound isn't much better, I will have to consider a new head unit but it's a low priority for now.
