Default 2000 XJ - Best Headlights/Brights Combination Switch?

When I flip the brights on my 2000 XJ at night, they begin to flicker and flash and go out, sometimes turning off my headlights too. I know this is about to happen because I hear a ticking noise from the steering column where the Combination Switch is attached. I've had this replaced 3 times by my mechanic, I know its a cheap part because he keeps telling me, the Jeep is 20 years old and the Combination Switch is a generic part he gets from his auto parts supplier. But 3 times? There must be a decent out there. Thanks for any suggestions.

The XJ still has the old headlight circuit that runs all the current to the lights thru the headlight switch and multifunction switch. You should install an upgrade harness that uses 2 relays to control this current. That way the stock system will only be handling about 3 amps or so, just enough to pull in those relays. The heavy current draw will be coming directly from the battery thru those relays and not thru the switches. It's a simple plug&play installation with no cutting or splicing of wires and can be found on Ebay, Amazon, and many other websites. It will make your headlight a lot brighter and can also allow you to upgrade the lights themselves.

Was yours basically plug and play? Also do you remember the manufacture of the relays? I remember reading couple years back that some of these came with cheap relays that did not last long. Thanks

It is plug and play, easy to install. Good quality big wires. I bought spare
relays from PartsExpress.com but haven't needed them. It comes with an
in-line fuse. Well-made, so far as I can see. This is the harness that I saw
Cruiser54 recommend at the time. No brand on the relays as I remember
and I can't get to the Jeep at the moment to check.

I recommend spending a few extra bucks for a Mopar switch. Here is
a Chrysler/Jeep dealer in Hickory, NC who sells parts online at a discount.
I have bought online and at the counter and they've always been very helpful.

^^^^ THANKS for the link. Went right in to my favorites.

By the way the part # for the relay replacement for the PUTCO harness is BWD 4136. Only needed one in I don't know how many years. I can still use the original one as an emergency spare if needed though.
