i just bought a 2000 cherokee and it started when i bought it yeterday and ran beautifully but now when i go to start it it does nothing? i have checked every fuse inside and out and cleaned up the connection at the power panel under the hood and checked every fuse in the kick panel in the car. tried starting with a screw driver by manualy engageing the starter but it wouldnt shoot out and grab the fly wheel? and shouldnt it be sending signal from the key when i go to start it? when i got to start it all the dash lights up like its supposed to and then when you go to turn it over the lights cut out like its gonna go to start and nothing happens, the relays are fine i checked them, i have no clue what went wrong?

Start by making sure your battery is good and fully charged. Then clean both battery terminals then move on and clean all of the grounding points. Which include battery to fender, oil dipstick, rear of the head to the firewall. Also make sure that the connections to the starter are clean and tight. The last ground point that many forget to clean is the mounting area between the starter and the engine block. Give that a try and let us know. If you are still having problems we can go from there.

If you do try to take it off to clean it. Be very careful removing it. They have the tendency of breaking if they haven't be taken off in a long time.

If you haven't got it staightened out yet and suspect the NSS try these.

Get a good battery on it for sure. I've not read of anyone who has had a NSS fail completely (not meaning it can't be refurbished) so I'm not sure if it's why your having to start it that way. There are two spring loaded contacts in the NSS. One of mine was stuck in so was making no contact at all. The other one was sticking intermittently. I had no backup lights (stuck contact) and every so often it wouldn't start in park (intermittent one). Your able to bypass the NSS with a jumper as I posted in that link above so I'm guessing that the way your having to start your vehicle involves something else. Could be a starter issue. You could go ahead and clean the NSS and see what happens. It will need it sooner or later. The grease in mine had completely dried out.
