Default 2000 cherokee wont start

So, I bought myself a 2000 xj, that i was told all it needed was a cam position sensor. I replaced that and it still wont run, its getting gas and spark and sounds like its almost running but wont start. Any ideas? thanks!

timing of spark is off?

cam sensor goes on top of whats called the oil pumpdrive/ cam synchronizer
there is a bolt thaqt hold this into the block and you need to line up two marks (located under the cam sensor) with cylinder #1 on TDC @ the power stroke

I've tried adjusting the timing with the cam sensor as much as I could, I got it to almost start but not quite. It has over 170,000 miles so I'm thinking it could be the timing chain? perhaps? I'm hoping its not though...

Its could be but its rare.
Look at the simple items first, its always something simple!

I had the same issue a few months back when I was @175,000 miles.
Line up the marks with a toothpick on the cam synch to make sure it doesnt move.
Make sure Pistion #1 is on the COMPRESSION stroke at TDC.
You can put your finger over the spark plug hole and have someone crank it until you feel pressure. Or easy fool proof way is do the same but replace your finger with a compression tester instead.

If its on the exhaust stroke the time will be 180 degrees from where it needs to be and it will not turn over.

If youre still getting no luck where I would turn next is testing the 3 wire plug that goes on the cam sensor.
Theres alot of threads about no spark try searching and looking around for answers a little also

Thanks, I never even thought about checking the plug that goes to the cam sensor. I probably should have mentioned before that the guy I bought it from changed the crank sensor and the cam sensor, but forgot to remove the pin from the cam sensor when he turned it over, and apparently that made him give up on the hole thing... not sure if any of that matters or not haha

So it's getting a nasty blue-white spark?
Is the fuel soaking the spark plugs?

Its getting a good spark and fuel is getting to the cylinders. It sounds like its timing, is there anyway to set the timing on these things?! I've been told by some you can set it with an obd2 scanner and told by others you can't. Does anyone know for sure?

Default Codes? CPS?

Just had the same issues...

Any codes? Did you try to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

I honestly haven't even noticed if the check engine light was on or not, and I haven't had a scan tool on it so I don't know if it has any codes. So if the PCM controls the timing does that mean it can be adjusted with a scan tool?
