Default 2000 Cherokee throwing multiple codes

So today I got under the car to do some work.

The reverse lights weren't working and the car wouldnt go into overdrive. Did some searching on the web and came up with cleaning the NSS. So I pulled that off today. Cleaning it out, made sure the spring loaded connectors floated easily and sanded down the connection points so they were clean. Put some lithium grase on the inside and put it back on the car.

I disconnected the battery while doing this hoping the computer would reset. Start the car and the reverse lights still dont work and it will go into overdrive sometimes. Meaning one trip the overdrive will work the entire time then I can turn the car off and back on again and the overdrive will NOT work. Its intermittant, but not during the same trip.

So the clean up of the NSS did nothing to help the problem. All the wires connecting it were fine so I dont know where to go next with this.

Went to autozone after and they ran the codes as follows

P0705 - related to the NSS
P0443 - EVAP system error which may be causing the following codes
P0130 - O2 Sensor
P0136 - O2 Sensor

So, any help is geatly appreciated. I dont want to buy a new NSS for $250 and have it not work.

One thing I noticed when putting the switch back on was that it says when the car is in N the line on the NSS should line up with the shaft that comes out of the tranny. It didnt line up exactly, but it was close.

Thanks.

Can't help with the overdirve question, but the back up lights may be a blown fuse which should be located in the engine compartment. I used one of those inline trailer connectors on my 96 cherokee which worked great for my 6-pin connector, but when I plugged in the standard 4-pin straight connector I would blow the fuse for the reverse lights. Tough not to put the cherokee into reverse. This would only happen when I would hook up a trailer with a 4-pin connector. The fuse was a mini blade fuse located in the fuse block panel next to the battery.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Ive been monitoring the overdrive situation for the past week.

Its been on a strict schedule.

Every time I start the car, it will alternate between overdrive working and not working. For example, drive to work the overdrive works. Drive home from work it doesnt. Next two trips the overdrive works and then doesnt. It has been on this on/off schedule for the past week without fail.

This makes me think it has something to do with the computer rather than anything mechanical. Any ideas?

This link tells how to check and adjust the NSS after cleaning. Worth a try. http://www.cherokee-jeep.com/1-2swremov.htm

Could it be a heat generated issue? If you drive it, shut it down then say restart it 10-15 minutes later does it work or not work like the alternating pattern you were describing?

Time between driving isnt a factor. It'll follow the same pattern after sitting for 8 hours at work or 5 minutes when getting gas.

Hi! Newb here, sorry to resurrect this thread.

What did you do to fix the Evap and O2 codes? I replaced the Evap Purge Valve Solenoid and the 2 O2 Sensors but the codes were still there.
