Hey guys,
Ive heard rumers from a couple places that 2000 Cherokees have some factory paint issues. Is there any truth to this?
I ask because I just bought my first Cherokee a couple weeks ago, and noticed that Im having some serious paint checking issues, esspecially on the hood and roof. I didnt notice this before buying the truck, the guy must have had it waxed up real heavy, and I was more concerned with the mechanics rather than the cosmetics. Is it just possible that the truck has had some second rate paint work?
Thanks!

Its checking, it shows small white crow's feet when you look closely. On the roof there is a few small spots where the paint has finally lifted and some rust is starting.
Im planning on starting the roof project soon. I talked to a paint guy and he recomended chemical stripping the roof, then using the DA on the rust spots. Followed by epoxy primer, paint, and clear. Not sure yet if that's the route Im going to go or not. The guy quoted wayt too high for me seeing as how I would be doing all the work except for the actual painting.
I may just DA the crap out of it, use some automotive etch primer and get a few spray cans of the matching factory # paint. After all, its on the roof, so it doesnt have to exacty be a show-room finish.

My 2000 is fairly clean. I think the PO of yours just never took care of the paint. The earlier Cherokees (like the 80's ones) had clearcoat issues from the factory. I'm pretty sure they solved that by the early '90s though. My dad had an '87 Limited that he had repainted in '92 because it looked so bad. The clearcoat was coming off just about the entire hood and the roof, and rust was forming on the door. That was back when it only had about 50K miles. He sold it with 210K miles back in 2004 with only a small rust spot on the passenger front door, so the new paint held up a lot better than the factory paint.
