Default 2000 Cherokee 4.0 oil pressure maxed

Just got in my Jeep and I noticed my oil pressure was maxed and didn't change, could y'all help me? Edit: above 4,000 rpm the pressure starts dropping

Pegged to the right max is usually a sign of a failed oil pressure sensor. You can try cleaning the connectors and check the wiring for any damage.

After cleaning connectors and seeing if it works, disconnect the connector and see if the pressure is any different.

If it is the same, then replace sending unit.

If you end up replacing the sending unit, do yourself a favor and purchase a Mopar unit from a Jeep dealership.

It's the best match for accuracy/reliability with your factory oil pressure gauge. Aftermarket sensors are a bit of "hit and miss".

Keep us updated, my money is on the oil pressure sending unit. Sometimes you have to push a pipe cleaner into the opening to clear things out a bit.

If you have the gauge that has an LED, you need the two wire variety. There should be two wires coming out of the connector. If no LED, then you need the one wire variety.

Might've figured it out, I recently hit the tranny fluid line and fluid was goin everywhere, most likely destroyed sender via tranny fluid. I'll clean it see if that does anything, I'm going to get another sender if that doesn't work. I'll definitely keep you guys posted

I've seen my oil pressure gauge peg out to max afew times. Only when starting, & it stays there until I do a key off. You might be able to do a "key on" / "key off" afew times to bring the gauge back to "0" when the key is off. After I do this little trick, the gauge works for several weeks.

It goes max right when I turn it on, goes back to normal when the key is off, Based on all the previous comments its probably just a bad sendor

I just changed mine (1996 4.0) last Sunday. There were some extreme right pegging events of the needle and then with some running the needle would drift back to 12 o'clock (40 psi). I finally bought a new sending unit and now the pressure max's out just past 40 psi at highway speed and idles somewhere between 40 and 20. That's what seems odd. Not until a few miles go by does it drift back to 20+ psi. and the idle pressure, though stable, varies. The new sending unit is a BWD unit (Discount Auto). When removing the old unit the plastic part broke off in my hand after wrenching it loose and turning it out by hand. I'm thinking the new sending unit might not be accurate. My 98 invariably idles below 20 psi.

The way these oil pressure sensors monitor pressure leaves a lot to be desired. The one on my '96 Blazer acts the same as my XJ's. If your concerned the only option is to install a mechanical gauge and verify the pressure being carried.
