Alright guys, so I'm hopefully making the purchase for all the fluids tonight. As of now, I got...

6 qts oil + filter
Air filter
5 qts ATF (4 for transmission, 1 for transfer case)
2 gallons of straight coolant (will have excess to keep in Jeep)
4 qts 75w-90 gear oil for differentials
~1.5 qts of power steering fluid I have at home
TOOLS TO BUY: bottle pump, rubber mallet, torque wrench, gasket scraper, latex gloves

Not going to touch the brake fluid. Questions before I buy,

1. For the gear oil, should I upgrade to synthetic or not? (ANSWERED)
2. For the power steering fluid, will this amount be enough if I am just sucking as much old PS fluid out, then adding new?
3. How do I know if I have Trac-Lok so I can figure out if I need friction reducer additive or not? And would this go in just the rear axle or both front and rear? The only one at Advance Auto is 7 oz. Would this be enough for both if I am supposed to put it in both?

Now to check for leaks in my radiator...

THANKS!

I use synthetic all the time. The price is too cheap to NOT use it.

you need to check the whole cooling system for leaks. also with yours being a 2001 you have the 0331 cylinder head which is known for cracking between exhaust ports 3 and 4, causing internal engine coolant loss.

the most important thing on ur list of to do's is; 1.check you're cooling system for leaks. if no leaks are found proceed to step 2
2. check you're oil before changing. is it milky? if so post back. if not step 3.
3. check you're tailpipe for signs of coolant.

if no signs of internal or external loss top off the cooling system and keep an eye on the coolant level and keep us updated.

also what is you're oil pressure at hot idle?

Okay thanks for the extensive post. Much appreciated man. Pressure is about halfway.

Alright 99% sure I have a cracked head... damn the 0331 curse! Won't be driving the Jeep until I get it to a mechanic and figure out what's up. Looked at my oil pressure and it's not at halfway anymore, it drops waaay too much.

For those of you who have '00-'01 XJs, read this thread: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/00-...erview-118922/ - I literally have every single symptom... great.

"SYMPTOM:
Unexplained coolant loss.
Oil pressure may go down after starting, warming up.
No heat; Low coolant.
Poor idle; Misfire. Check Engine Light."
