Word on the street is the early XJ's won't fit a 4.0 because the firewall isn't set up for it, no room. My 86 was a 2.8, broke but I put a small block Chevy in it.

Want a direct or nearly direct.
Get a 3.4L from a Firebird or Camero and put it in.
They make good power for the size and are reliable.

Just google S10 2.8 to 3.4 swap.

I got an S15 GMC Jimmy, 230k miles its a good engine, just gutless.
Averages 18mpg unless I got the trailer behind it then its 14mpg.

I would still get it if it were in build-able shape. It would make a nice project.

I would too,
The 3.4L swap would be easy.
Give you a 160HP/200lb torque engine with minimal fuss.
Not bad when you consider the 4.0 Renix is only 175HP (if I remember right) and you will have less weight too.
I'm sure you will have to upgrade the carb/intake to achieve those numbers, or leanr how to wire up the GM multi-point injection.
