1999 sport engine long block/
I bought a 1999 CHEROKEE SPORT with a bad engine. I am going to replace the engine with a reman long block from Accurate Engines out of Michigan.
I have a few questions,
1. has anyone used their Long Blocks?
2. How was the service and any problems?
3. They are telling me that there are 2 different long blocks for a 1999 and that I can tell them a part by the angle of the oil filter. I thought all 99s were of the new block design?
4. I am going to change out the torque converter. Automatic Trans. Any suggestions on a better converter?
5. after doing a lot of research, I have decided on the 0280155849 fuel injectors from the 1999 Taurus. If the block is different( as Accurate Engine is say is possible) will these injectors work in both blocks?
thanks

Hello,
Great idea but what are you buying?
A Jasper long block goes for $2999.00
So what are you getting ? The cost cutters buy the cheapest parts they can get on the international market, Not name brands like Clevite, Fereral-Mogal, Sealed Power etc.
On another post the guy had pics of his cam bearings litterely being squeezed out from the bores by the cam, like liquid metal. That's cause they were probably just solid soft aluminum, not the three or four layer metal sandwhich used by better builders.
What brands are they selling you and what is their warranty?
There is a company in Maine, Marshal Automotive Machine which sells the 4.0 long block for $1399. with a 3 year, 40,000 mile warranty. No up-front core charge. If you don't return it they charge you accordingly.
Best of Luck to you..... Let us know how you make out.

thank you for your concern with the long block. I've done some research on the engine up in Michigan. They use all American parts. They assemble the engines in Grandville. they also have a warranty.has anyone ever run into the fact that a 1999 Jeep sport could possibly have two different long blocks. What I'd like to know is about the torque converter for an automatic transmission? Is there any special torque converter that would help for pulling.
Are easy to get. There isn't much they do to them aside from furnace brazing in a few extra blades. Any good converter co. can offer you a heavy duty model although the factory units are pretty hearty.
There are two blocks you'll always hear questions about. I'm not positive but I think only the XJ got the #49 block. The main type fits most all other jeeps. It has the oil filter coming straight out the side of the block, very straight and level, because it fits in most Jeep vehicles except the XJ.
The XJ, being so compact got only the #49 block which has the filter pad coming straight out but the pad is angled downward so they can fit a 90 degree filter adapter between the block and frame allowing the filter to point to the rear of the engine rather than sticking straight out as it does with those other blocks. You can put an XJ block into any Jeep product but only an XJ block fits into an XJ body.
As always, Best of luck to you,
Dan

Thanks almido!
As far as the alternator and other accessories, the newer model was 99 and later? Is that right. If so, is that what the XJ block is? And instead of trying to see the oil filter angle, is there another way to tell which block is which while in the Jeep and not pulled out?
That way I can get the engine long block ordered and be ready to exchange when it arrives.

Years Engine Casting Number
1987-90 53005535 (8933002665)
1991-95 53008405
1996-98 53020569
1999-04 53010449
You need the 449 block or as I referred to it, the 49 block.
These numbers are on the left side of the block under the intake and might be hard to see.
I suggest looking at the oil filter. It should have the closed end facing the rear of the jeep, the front end screwed onto a 90 degree adaptor. It should be parallel to the crankshaft. The adaptor should be screwed to the block on an "up" angle. The block is made so the filter would have to fit facing downward if it were not for the angle adaptor.
They did this because there isn't enough room between the frame rails of the Cherokee for the filter to come out straight as it does in the other jeep vehicles.
If you order the 449 block for the Cherokee sport with the angled oil filter they will know what engine to sell you.
Good Luck with it.......Dan

To answer your question yes there was 2 different engines in the 99 starting mid year. Most all of the rebuilders want the casting numbers on the block and what I would provide.
In very low cost rebuilds like that they reuse many of the old parts in the engine only replacing what must be to make run properly. The quality and what (New) parts were replaced is what the basis of the cost comes from.
Ask to see the exact list of new parts (brands) and work done to engine during rebuild, then post back we can help you better.
