Checking for codes is absolutely a good start. That may provide a definite roadmap to resolving this.
In the absence of any codes, you are going to have to resort to basic no-start troubleshooting. And that starts with spark.
Remove a plug, keep it attached to the plug wire, place the plug electrode near a good engine ground, have a buddy crank the engine while you watch. You are looking for a strong, BLUE, snapping spark. Yellow/orange/white indicates a weak spark which may not be strong enough to start the engine (weak spark usually is a weak coil).
IF spark checks out (and only if), then try a shot of starting fluid into the intake. If the engine starts and runs for a few seconds using this technique, then you have identified a "fuel delivery" problem.
Good luck and report back what you find with the above techniques!

You could have mutiple diagnostic trouble codes stored with one Check Engine light. Have the PCM scanned again, looking for all existing codes and pending codes.
List them here please.
Edit: List the code number(s), not the generic interpretation of your mechanic.

Next time make the post more clear. You get a better response when you explain the issue better.
