Sounds like you answered your own question, I would say it's an exhaust leak too. 242 exhaust manifolds are known to crack and need replacement.

If you have not already I would open the hood and use the trhottle to help identify where it is coming from.

Dent is courtesy of the factory, gives clearance for driveshaft. The exhaust is prone to cracking.

I have a header on mine and it's cracked on a primary, right where it's welded to the header flange. I have a new one, but haven't tackled the job yet. I'd pop the hood and work the gas, and look where mine was cracked. XJ's header sucks!!

My new header cracked in only 20K miles....but lets face it my failure as well as 75%+ are due to weak/bad motor mounts....if your header cracked Replace the mounts(i spent 39$ for the pair at Advance auto.)...weld the header for -98 or buy a new one for 99+....

There's a thread on here somewhere about dual cast exhaust manifolds, as apposed to the tube header style, that should cure your problem. I can't find the thread, and I'm not too familiar with the 4.0L so I don't know any more info. Sorry if this doesn't apply to your year.
