1996 Jeep Cherokee leaked of transmission fluid while parked through the night.
During the night I awoke to find I leaked all my tranny fluid throughout the night. I poured some in to find where it was leaking and it's coming out of the very bottom gap on the transmission housing. What would cause this leak? Seal?

You said "all". What's that, 13 quarts?
Probably front pump seal. Or cracked torque converter. Or torque converter drain plug. That's all there is on that end of the tranny.

Somewhere around that. Its was comletely drained this morning with a lot of tranny fluid in my shop floor. Can I interchange a 2wd 2001 cherokee xj tranny w a 4x4 1996 cherokee xj?

Well, a little bit of trans fluid goes a long way.
If it was shifting OK before, and the trans fluid is red in color (which I'm sure you can see if is or not), I would have it towed to a reputable transmission shop, which is hard to find.
It might just need a pump seal or torque converter. Not the whole thing.
If it is shot, just have them rebuild yours. No swapping worries. Make sure they use a new torque converter. Ask.

I've already dropped the transmission... gonna open it up in the morning. I found a used tranny with 30000 miles on it for 300$ with a 90 day warranty and that's without having to give them mine. So I'm going to purchase it and keep this one as a spare.
