1996 Cherokee dies when put in reverse

1996 Cherokee dies when put in reverse
Hey guys I'm new to jeeps and new to the site. Just bought a 1996 cherokee that ran and drive great until I put an exhaust on it and now it does when I put it in reverse. If the key is on and it's not running you can hear the fuel pump running until I put it in reverse. Any suggestions on what might be going on?
