There is a small round tag on the rear of the T-case, it will either say NP242 0r NP 231j. That would be the hard way to identify it. What is wrong with yours? ...Tj

Okay... you are describing a handful of different problems...

The clicking noise is likely a bad u-joint. They make a clicking noise at first as they go bad. Does it get worse turning one direction or the other???

When you say the 4wd clunks when you take off in 4wd..Does it clunk once and then its fine.. or does it continue to do it???

From your description of the shifter handle you have an NP 231.

If you have a single clunk, do two things... A. Check the fluid in the transfer case. Its ATF, so it should be a nice red color. If its not change it. The correct fluid level is that it should be just at the bottom of the fill plug.

B. Check the operation of the shift linkage. Many times if the Jeep hasn't been used the linkage will bind and you won't quite have it engaged completely in 4wd and it will clunk as it goes in.

If you do go to get another T-case, make sure its the correct NP-231. Wranglers and Dakotas used them also, but neither is a bolt in replacement for the Cherokee. Also the early model Cherokees used a 21 spline input, whereas yours will have a 23 spline.
