Default 1991 OBD I Codes: Key Trick doesn’t work

“Using the ignition switch, at no point do you actually start the Jeep: Start with the ignition in the OFF position, Turn the key to ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON ... stop .. leave the key in the ON position (Complete this sequence in under 5 seconds). Once you stop the key in the ON position, the check engine light will stay lit for a moment.”

Nope.

Tried with break on and off. It’s a manual. Tried in-gear. Not in-gear.

Does it matter if off is past the “key lever lock?”. Tried it as described above. No go.

Found videos of people saying five times and ten times too.

Any suggestions?

Jeep will not start.

Fuel pump was replaced about 15 months ago. The way this works, I suspect that the fuel pump has failed because it seems that about 50% of all the auto parts store products fail after a very short period of time.

What do yo mean, no start?
Does the engine turn over with the key but not start?

Engine turns over fine, but engine will not fire.

Don't be too excited about the codes on OBD-1 helping you anyway. Move on from that.

Do you have spark?

Do you have about 40 PSI fuel pressure?

Will it start if you squirt starting fluid in the throttle body and then try? This one is easy.

The in-line spark tester isn’t lighting up when I attempt to start the vehicle.

Sharing the information in case it reveals anything… The reason that I was trying to find the codes was because the check engine light is coming on anytime I drive on a highway with the XJ. The light does not come on when I make my one mile drive to work. Although on the last road trip, the check engine light was on for about 60 - 70 miles, then it was off (60+ miles). Stopped, got gas, 20 miles later, it was on, then remained on for the remaining 100+ miles of the trip.

While I am at it here, I have noticed recently that the Jeep has been starting differently. Hard to explain. But it seems that I would turn the key forward, the engine would turn over four or five times, then start, but it was after I had released the key. Not sure if that makes sense.
It was sort of like, “Why did it start after I released the key?”

Mopar part 83500239 seems to be impossible to find 💩 Actuator for a 91’ manual transmission XJ.

It was the fuel pump. The fuel pump was shorting out and causing a fuse to blow.
