I've been playing with my cherokee trying to get it into 4wd mode. I have done it stopped and moving at slow speeds but it's like putting it in neutral. I heard you have to be moving at least 30mph for it to engage. Is that right? It sounds like that would tear something up to me.
You can "shift on the fly" at up to 45mph
just let off the gas and pull the shifter back to 4hi. DO NOT try going to 4lo while moving.
Another way is to stop, put it in neutral, and pull the shifter back to 4hi or 4lo.
Maybe your shifter is out of adjustment.
You do not have to be moving at 30mph, whoever told you that should be KITN (kicked in the nuts
. Just made it up
lol)
Also, be sure to not use it on pavement unless you have the full time (NP242) Tcase

I just put mine in Neutral and then shift mine into 4PT or 4FT or even 4L. but I havent done it moving. I guess in fear of breaking something. lol I know its called shift on the fly but man it just seems like something will break. lol
I do it all the time...
Nothing to worry about really. I was worried at first too.
You just let off teh gas, pull the lever up into 4hi. When youre done, let off the gas and push it back to 2hi

Yup, FT and PT but no 4L
NOTE: If shift lever is moved from one position to another
while the vehicle is not moving, it may be necessary to move
the vehicle forward or backwards slightly for the transfer case
to fully engage 4WD, especially in cold weather.
NOTE: it may be necessary when shifting on the fly between 2WD,
4 PARTTIME or 4 FULLTIME to briefly lift off the throttle once or
twice, especially in cold weather.
CAUTION: Never attempt to engage 4WD LO when vehicle is moving faster
than 2-3 mph (3-5 kmh). Transfer case damage may result.
*WARNING* you can't switch to 4WD LO "on the fly" like you can with
4WD HI.The vehicle must be moving slowly (2-3 mph) and the
*TRANSMISSION* must be shifted to neutral.
*WARNING: NEVER PARK YOUR VEHICLE WITH RANGE LEVER IN THE
N (NEUTRAL) POSITION. THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL UNEXPECTEDLY
EVEN IF AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS PLACED IN PARK OR A
MANUAL TRANSMISSION IS IN GEAR.*

sometimes you have to jerk the 4wd shifter a little.
when i first got my jeep i was having the same problem. i would put it in 4hi and push the gas and it would rev up.
dont yank it so hard it breaks just give it a good tug and look on the dash, the "PART TIME/FULL TIME" light should go on

mine goes pretty easy usually in to 4H, but sometimes I have to get rough on the lever to push it into 4L

mines a standard. it goes right in at any speed as long as all the tires are rotating at the same speed. if the rear tires are spinning and the front arnt it wont go in. otherwise itll go into 4wd anytime you pull the handle
