Had it at mechanic he did diagnosis. All he found was firing order was off probably when I replaced distributor. But I think it is the connection for the Cps. Stopped working again and messed with connector then started

Exclamation help

so I’m currently working on my 91 jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0, I’m have a small problem with it starting, i started it this morning and drove to the mall 30 minuets later when i return for the mall to start it, it doesn’t turn over. no engine noise at all, no pistons firing or belts moving nothing. its not my battery because all my electronics work such as my light, sound system ect. i just went and replace the started and still nothing. if I have a buddy twist the ignition and i ark the starter solenoid it fires up like a champ. but as soon as i turn it off and retry it. doesn’t start. any ideas?

sounds like its not getting fuel. turn the key to on and listen to see if your fuel pump turns on, i had the same problem in a geo tracker so i traced the wires back and it ended up just being the fuel pump relay was bad

I just had this problem with my 1990 this past weekend. Make sure your gas pump is priming once you move the key into the start position. By the sound of it though it sounds like what I had. I tested the coil and distributer as well as the CPS and everything was checking out. So I disconnected and reconnected all my plugs pertaining to that system. What can happen is those connections can corrode and then not let enough electricity flow to the ignition system. So when you pull the connection appart and put it back together you are scratching the metal and making a clean contact. One thing Im going to do with my jeep is put die electric grease on the connections to help protect the connection. I hope this helps.

Excellent advice. I would add spraying out the connectors with a good electrical contact cleaner during this procedure. Every connector under the hood. Go for it.

Met a guy that had same problem with his jeep years ago and it was the connection for the Cps. He initially cleaned the connection and it worked but he ended up cutting out the connection and hardwired it. Mine worked for a bit longer then had problems again and I did the same cutting the connection out haven't had problems since.

First thing to check is how many AC volts the CPS is generating. Needs to be .5 AC volts unplugged and cranking the engine over.

And yes, there can be resistance in the plug, and the C101 if it's an 87 or 88.

I'd be careful pulling things apart, I have a 1990 and things tend to crumble. My 90' has a similar problem, I replaced the CKS (CPS) and it helped w the starting problem, but I still have occasional start problems.

If you still have occasional starting problems with a new CPS, unplug the CPS, probe the two connectors on the sensor side with your meter set to AC volts. Crank the engine over and see what the meter says. It should be at least .5 AC volts. Some/many replacement CPSs are POSs and don't generate a strong enough signal, resulting in long crank times and intermittent no-starts.
