1989 Jeep Cherokee long cold start

i have a jeep cherokee pioneer that takes a long time to start when cold. it turns but wont turn on after i mess with it for a while. after it starts and warms up i can turn it off and on with no problem. any ideas on whats wrong?

No. in 89 that troublesome connector was eliminated. That's for 87 and 88.
