Top end cleaner. Must for high miles engines. Will smooth the idle and quiet the knocking from carbon buildup. Cheap and fast and critical. Do some due diligence ..do it carefully though.

I missed the 'idling at 3000 rpm' part. So top end cleaner will likely not fix that and without more information I have no advice although my first thought is a wicked vacuum leak.. I would ask the OP if he has a scan tool and what the tps is reading. 3k rpm is basically a screaming engine I would not run it like that. Also As far as top end cleaner not being advice, can you elaborate on how thats not advice? He complains of rough idle (though I would not call 3000 rpms an idle at all). Top end cleaning will help a dirty engine idle smoother. It's a suggestion, this is a help forum, the OP is looking for suggestions. Maybe Im missing something.

Because it didn't apply. You said yourself that you "missed the 'idling at 3000 rpm' part"... so you didn't read the whole post. It's not helpful if you're not going to be thorough. PLUS, MOST "top end cleaners" are snake oil. They don't do anything life-changing to the internals of the engine that good old fashioned water in the throttle body won't do... in fact, more often that not, water does a better job at steam-cleaning the top of the piston than detergents will do. It will help smooth a rough idle a little bit, sure... but that's not the OP's problem.

Idling at 3000 on startup is a TPS issue.

Bad ground to it, improper adjustment, or failed part.

Keep in mind multiple issues could be present.

Here are some links to help pinpoint the issue and prevent future issues.

Perform these simple procedures in the order listed above.

OP, this is the Renix guru. He knows about everything there is to know (and then some) about Renix. Follow his advice and you'll be loving the way your jeep runs in no time.

Had an 87 with almost the exact same problem. Fixed one vacuum hose and it fixed all my issues. Definitely try that first.
