Default 1989 jeep cherokee fuel pump problem?

I have a 1989 Jeep cherokee 4.0 that has a hard time starting. It turns over for about 2 seconds in the morning then starts. Every other time after that it takes about 6-8 seconds to start. (It does start every time....never stalls). My mechanic tested the fuel pump and said there is very little pressure. He wants to charge me $225 for parts and labor. Does this sound like the problem or can it possible be something else? Going back over all of the reciepts of the previous owner shows it was replaced 3 times already...It does have 226,000 mi though. Is there anything else I should look into?

i went through the same thing with my jeep, i would change it and also do the filter to but its a cheap fix if u have time to do it ur self. I would also check to see if u have a leak somewhere or hose looks bad.

Remember you are running a Renix system. They usually take a few more seconds of cranking to start. A good post was on here earlier about why is cranks so long.

Check the pressure on the fuel rail with a guage. That is the only way to see if you are getting enough pressue in the entire system. If it is low, replace the in-line filter first, then move to the pump if the pressure is not within limits.

try your fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Its like 50 bucks at auto zone and you can do it yourself.

also check and see if you are even getting fuel to the fuel rail.towards the front there should be a little cap.unscrew it and push in the little pin and see if fuel shoots out.

My 89 takes anywhere between 5-10 seconds to start almost every time. It's the nature of the beast.

A fuel pump is stupid simple, its on the front side of the tank, just have to tap the lock ring loose. I wouldn't even consider paying to have it done.
