1989 Cherokee XJ weak brakes
Hello to All,I am pleased to be able to join such a forum dedicated to Jeeps. I have a 1989 Cherokee XJ 4X4 2DR. I have always had bad brake issues such as stopping or locking up the tire. I have just the basic brake system that was installed on the jeep . As today I have changed out the brake booster and bled the brakes in the last 2-3 years all brakes system including hose and line have been changed out. The only original part in the brake system is the proportional valve. The rear tires on lock up only lock up when slowly going down my driveway while wet on a decline of a driveway, that is the only time the tires (rear only) lock up. I even attempted power braking and accelerating at the same time, right rear smoking and vehicle in motion. I did perform a good brake bleed on every change of components, still I get about3-6 inches of travel on brake pedal. Also when I initially start the jeep with foot on brakes the pedal just about goes to the floor. Do anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is ?

Have you ever adjusted your rear brake shoes?

Thanks cruiser 54 for replying, yes I have adjusted the rear brakes they only locked up during the wet down hill of my drive way. No other lock up after the adjustment. The brake pedal travel and actual results of braking makes no sense. I have had issues with majority of the local dealerships when I take my vehicle to them for any type of maintenance " this vehicle is to old we do not work on them". Thanks dealership for standing behind your product.Does anyone else have any suggestions ?

Yes. Make sure the brake booster to master cylinder adjustment is correct.
Go to www.cruiser54.com to see the procedure. It's the only thing on my new website.

Change the rear shoes to a different/better brand. They may be absorbing moisture and swelling.
My wife had an '88 Aerostar years ago that would do this. Ford later admitted this was a fairly common problem for them. The organic compound the shoes were made from was hydrophilic, or water-absorbing.
After they were heated up a little, they were fine. Until the next time it was foggy or rainy.
